History:

Institute for clinical research in tropical medicine (ICRTM) was established as decision No 706/BYT-QD dated 11th November, 1989 by ministry of health basing on anexing 3 departmnts: Communicable diseases department and microbiology department (Bach Mai hospital) and the communicable diseases faculty (Ha Noi Medical University). The its predecessor was the communicable hospital built in 1911.

Functions and tasks:

- Researching systematically the methods of diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases and tropical diseases.
- Training and retraining the communicable disease profession (graduation and post graduation).
- Leading and guiding the techniques and profession in communicable-profession and clinical microbiology for lower levels in the whole country.
- Dosmetic and international scientific cooperation.
- Dissemining the knowledge of communicable profession to everybody to contribute to the primary health care.
- Being the highest levels in exammining and treating the communicable diseases and tropical diseases.

The main achievements:

- Researching to make up successfully many guidlines for diagnosing and treating communicable diseases, epidemic such as: cholera, multidrug ressistance typhoid, dengue fever, haemorrhagic fever and HIV/AIDS... etc...
- Completing many valuable scientific research themes at national or ministrial levels such as causes of viral hepatitis; opportunity infections in HIV/AIDS, treatment of multidrug-resistance typhoid etc...
- Hosting many programs in the whole country such as: HIV/AIDS treatment, diagnose and treatment of dengue fever/haemorrhagic dengue fever and antibiotic sussceptibility testing study.
- Developing the international cooperation with countries, organizations such as: WHO, Swidish, Japan, France and Thai Lan etc...
- Trained many resident hospital doctors, master of science, 1st or 2nd medical doctors, phylosophy doctors.
- Being a training facility for medical students and foreign medical doctors such as: France, America.
