National institute of mental health (NIMH) is one of the Bach Mai university hospital. NIMH was established as dicision No 784BYT/QD by ministry of health in 8 th August 1991. It is a leading institute for psychology.

Function and tasks:

- Researching and guiding the professional facilities to research the mental issues and important socio-psychological issues in this period.
- Training and retraining mental profession cadres (graduation and post graduation) to work in the public mental health care.
- Combinning with the national mental hospital to lead and guide the mental professional techniques in the whole country and to examine the medical legality.
- Cooperating with the other countries and international organization in psychological science to develope and upgrade the psychological professional activities.
- Collaborating with the national mental hospital and related organizations to communicate and educate the popular knowledge of the psychological health care in the publicity.

1. Examination and treatment department for outpatients:

. Chief of examination and treatment department for outpatients: 2nd grade medical doctor: Dong Minh Tiep
. Tasks:
+ Examining and treating patients befor being admitted to hospital and after discharging.
+ Examining and treating pediatric psychological outpatients.
+ Examining and treating the patients with disorders related stress.
+ Researching the use of methadone in treating patients with drug addiction (opioid form)
+ Consulting the psychological health.

2. Inpatient departments including:

. Unit T4 (male patients): 25 beds
. Chief of Unit T4: 2nd grade medical doctor Nguyen Thi Mai
. Unit T5 (female patients): 25 beds
. Chief of Unit T5: M.S, 2nd grade medical doctor Trinh Ngoc Tuan.
. Tasks:
+ Admitting and researching the diagnose and treatment of patients with psychological disorders.
+ Being training facilities for graduating and postgraduating

The main achievements:

* Treatment: 500 cases of patient with acute psychological disorders or related other etiology are admitted and treated and 1000 cases of outpatient are examined and treated.
* Education and training: (in combination with Ha Noi medical university)
. 5Ph.D, 15 M.S and 20 of 2 nd grade medical doctors postgraduated.
. 5 candidates are being trained.
. 5-10 of 1 st grade medical doctors; 1-2 resident hospital doctor and 300 medical students are trained every year.
* Participating a national scientific theme. Hosting a ministry scientific theme. Implementing 5-7 local scientific theme.
* Hosting the cooperation project with WHO in order to strengthen people's psychological health.
* Combinning with the national mental hospital to deal and guide the national program on psychological health and development of network and quality of psychological health sevices.
* Editing and publishing the psychological materials, informing and communicating... to contribute the improvement of people knowledge of the mental health.
