* History:

The national institute of pediatrics (NIP) was established as decision number of 111/CP dated 14th july 1969 by government commission of SRV.
1969-1981: NIP was located in Bach Mai hospital and had 5 department and 150 staffs.
1975-1981: NIP was rebuilt in the new ground (9ha) and supported by swidden government and people. This new NIP was divided 3 sections:
- Consultation and treatment section (Consultation, inpatient and laboratory)
- The medical equipment and common equipment supply section.
- Administration and management.
This new NIP has been official brought in to operation since 1981. This was a completed hospital with good and modern equipments. NIP is responsible for consultation and treatment for children (0-15 age).

NIP is hospital institute with 7 main functions:

- Being the national hospital of pediatrys - the highest and final treatment level for pediatric etiology.
- Researching and applying the health protection science for children
- Participating and being the major facility for training middle degree, graduation and postgraduation of pediatric profession.
- Guiding the pediatric system through the country.
- Communication and education for pediatric health
- International cooperation

* Materials and equipments:

NIP is quite mordern and uniform institute and abble to implement many the high techniques

- Consultant: 800-1000 examinations daily
- Inpatient unit: block with 8 floors for 500 patients
- Surgery unit: capacity of 5000 operations per year, is being widen and can meet all needs of surgeries.
- Biochemical laboratory: Automatic equipments are installed can fulfil most of biochemical indicators in blood and body fluids with micro quantative techniques, enzyme attachment immune and electronic attachment techniques.
- Hematology laboratory: Automatic equipments can measure 18 hematologic indicators at the same time.
- Microbiology unit: identifying the bacteria, ELISA can find rapidly the bacteria in blood, fluid, hapatitis serum diagnose, encephalitis, dengue haemorrhagic fever, salmonella, tuberculosis, parasites in blood and feces.
- Picture achieving computer system such as CT scanner, color supertonic doppler, electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram.
- Intensive care unit with the modern techniques.
- NIP has power station, air pressor, oxygen production machine for treatment and accommodation.
- Blood trassfusion unit: Can provide 1000 lit of blood for treatment and blood substitution.
- Pharmacy unit: Can meet the need of essential drugs and specific drugs.

+ Inpatients: 18000-20000
 + Outpatients: 160000-180000
+ Surgeries: 4500
+ Dead rate: reducing from 18% (1986s) to 2,5% (2000s)

- Training:

NIP is a big training facility, allways has 200-300 medical students and postgraduated trainees in which:

+ Paediatricians: 50
+ 1st grade medical doctor: 60-80
+ 2nd grade medical doctor: 10
+ Ph.D:5

NIP is also major facility for pediatric practising of medical students.

- Being the center for scientific research of pediatry. NIP is host of many national themes, ministrial themes and international themes in cooperation. Many themes are reported in the international meetings 40-50 themes are completed everyyear.

- Cooperating with swiden from 1975-1999
- Many projects are implemented in cooperating with Australia, Italy, Netherland, France, America and Japan.
