Researching activity:

Investigation and collection of medicinal plants:

- Investigation and collection of medicinal plant through the country
- Researching on the grow
+ Immigrating many medicinal plants from abroad (Europe, China and India... etc...)
+ Researching on grow of wild-medicinal plants
+ Growing the medicinal plants for production and export

Some researched drugs from medicinal plants:

- Anti-dysentery
- Antibiotic
- Anti allergy
- Anti malaria
- Drugs for gastrointestinal hepatic and urinary diseases.
- Antripyretic, anti flu and anti anxiolytic
- Obstetric and gynaecological drugs.
- Drugs for endocrine system such as diabetes
- Drugs for cardiovascular diseases.
- Drugs for immunological system and supporting the anticancer treatment

From 1986 to 2000 there are 184 themes implemented as follows:

National projects: 25
Ministry projects: 24
Local projects: 135

Some major results of research:

- 1971-1975: 1120 species and 193 family names are investigated in which 300-400 species belong the list of medicinal plants have being exploited and traded.
- 1976-1985: 1548 species belong 225 family names have been investigated; 80% among them are wild plants. 4000 species have been investigated through the country and 10.000 samples were stored.
- Many reference and introduction textbooks were published for medicinal plants resources by English, French, Russia and Vietnamese.
- 70 species were immigrated and tamed for pharmaceutical industry, traditional medicine and export.
- 50 drugs have being researched and applied to production. Some of them are good effects such as Artemisinine (anti malaria), Bidentin (cholesterol lowering), Rancaxin (anti-hypertension), Abilin (anti hepatitis), Idotamin() Rutin C (anti haemorrhagic fever), D-strophantin (cardiovascular drug), Diosgenin (material for steroid synthesis), Hai na (anti hepatotis)... etc...
- 11 production processes of drug are being transfered to pharmaceutical factories through the country.

Post graduation training:

Training the Ph.Ds belong two professions as follows:

- Pharmacognosy and traditional medicine.
- Pharmacology.
- NIMM also participates to teach researchers on other specialities.

Researchers, trainees come from foreign countries such as Cuba, Laos, ...etc...

International cooperation:

NIMM cooperates with many international organization and foreign countries such as soviet union (former), Germany, China, India, Hungary, South Korea, Japan, France and Thai Lan ... etc... NIMM participates many the international conference on pharmacognosy.
