History:

The national institute of nutrition (NIN) was established according to the dicision No 181/CP by Vietnam government dated 13th June 1980. NIN is leading institute in researching, training and deploying the activities of nutrition, food science and food hygience to submit to ministry of health for the ways of prevention and treatment by suitable dietery with the needs of nutrition and condition of Viet Nam socio-economy development in various periods.

Tasks:

Research:

- Researching the needs of nutrition and structure of Vietnamese meals which are proper with physiological state, ecological condition and the socio-economic condition of Viet Nam in each period.
- Analysing the nutrition value of food in structure of Vietnamese meals; setting up the quality standards of food in the structure of Vietnamese meals.
- Researching the hygience in eating and drinking; participating to make the regulation of eating and drinking and to eatablish the criteria of the food quality control that these food are imported or processed in Viet Nam.
- Researching the ways of treatment by eating and drinking; setting up the diatery as disease.
- Researching the identification of nutritions condition, the food consumption and the food hygience and safety.
- Researching the introduction of solutions to improve the nutritious conditions and ensure the food hygience and safety.

Training:

- Complementing the profession and method of research in nutrition and hygience and safety.
- Training and retraining for cadres in profession of nutrition and food hygience and safety.
- Participating in graduation and postgraduation in profession of nutrition and food hygience and safety.

Profession leading and guiding:

- Examining, supervising and evaluating the implemetation of technical profession in facilities with tasks of nutrition and food safety and hygiency.
- Setting up the plan and solutions to deploy the profession of nutrition and food safety and hygience in: network making, research, training and implementation of programs and projects of nutrition and food safety and hygience.
- Organizing the technical meetings, training courses of profession of nutrition and food safety and hygience.
- The education and communication of rational nutrition and food safety and hygience.

International cooperation:

- Establishing and enhancing the relations with countries and organizations in the region and in the world in the field of nutrition and food safety and hygience.
- Sending and admitting the cadres to train, research and exchange the experiences with countries and organizations in the region and in the world.
- Cooperating in researching and training for the cadres and deploying the projects in the field of nutrition and food safety and hygience.

NIN is focal point of world health organization for the food safety and hygience in 1995, the center for cooperation of public nutrition of SEAMEO-TROPMED in 1994 and is national focal point of nutrition and food safety and hygience.

Organizational structure:

Department of basic and school nutrition:

- Chief of: Ph.D Do Thi Kim Lien
- Labos: biochemistry, nutritious physiology and research on nutrition in school:
- Being responsible for setting up, checking and regulating the need of nutrition of Vietnamese; Researching the basic metabolism and energy consumption in order to identify the need of energy of Vietnamese; Setting up the consultant for rational nutrition; setting up the indicators of physiology, biochemistry in order to evaluate the nutritious condition.
- Evaluating the condition of obesity in adults and related factors; Establishing the strategy for obesity prevention and control; Evaluating, supervising the physical and psychological development of children in school age; setting up and developing the nutritious education programs in school; Researching and prapagandizing the breakfast and lunch in school; setting up the training program for nutrition and food safety and hygience for health workers and chefs in school; Coodinating with center for education and other department in order to implement the training for health workers and chefs in school.

The public nutrition department:

- Chief of: M.D Le Bach Mai
- Researching, monitoring the kinetics of the nutrition problem related with the public health accordance with ages (especially mother and children) and occupation: food consumption, nutritious condition, hypoferric anemia, vitamin A deficiency, ... researching the nutrition epidemiology in school; Deploying the intervention programs for health problems related the public health.

The applying nutrition department: chief of Ph.D Tu Ngu

- Researching the food safety in the family grade; supervising the nutrition and food; Interventing the nutrition in the publicity. This department has two teams: the food safety and nutrition supervision.

Etiological nutrition and nutritious regulation department

- Setting up the treatment dietery, dietery in hospital, the dietery for metabolic disorder and elderly, recovering dietery for malnutrious children; dietery advice; organizing the activities of nutrition department in hospitals, applying the results of researches in practices and supplement of profession for cadres.

The food safety and hygience department:

- Researching the composition of food nutrition, chemical toxics and food microorganism; setting up the standards of quality and controlling the quality of the food hygience and safety.

Research and application for nutritious trace element:

- Chief of Ph.D Nguyen Xuan Ninh
- Researching the needs, role and metabolism of trace elements for human health.
- Evaluating and monitoring the condition of trace element deficiency (vitamin A, hypoferric anemia) of various population groups in Viet Nam.
- Cooperating with related institutes to research the solutions aiming improvement of the condition of trace element deficiency in Viet Nam.
- Enhancing the international cooperation in the field of nutrious trace element.

Training center for nutrition and food:

- Director: Ph.D Le Thi Hop
- Being the sector - crossing training facility in nutrition and food safety through the country. The main activities of the center are to train the cadres for sector-crossing nutrition and to upgrade the professional knowledge for cadres of nutrition profession. Collaborating with the Ha Noi medical University and other universities in training the master of science of nutrition and food safety profession and preparing the material facility to train the Ph.D of this profession. Setting up the strong network of cadres of nutrition from central level to local levels).

Center for the nutrition communication and education

- Chief of: Ph. D Cao Thi Hau
- Deploying the education activities of nutrition, disseminating the knowledge of rational nutrition and the food hygience and advising the nutrition. Researching the KAP (knowledge, attitute and practice) and educating the nutrition in order to change the behaviour of nutrition. Researching the field related with behaviour changes to apply for the nutrition and health education.

Management and administration departments:

Including the planning department, personnel department, administration department, the international cooperation department, the quality control of nutrition department and the practising department.

Some main achievements:

- Evaluating the nutrition condition and the fact nutrition part of Vietnamese in the various regions.
- Evaluating the epidemiological features of diseases caused by malnutrition.
- Setting up the need of nutrition for Vietnamese which is basis of the nutrition policies of Viet Nam government.
- Setting up and updating the list of the nutrition components of the Vietnamese food.
- Researching the food hygience and safety, setting up the hygience standards which is legal basis of state management in the food hygience and safety.
- Researching the nutrition aspects in the alternative periods.
- Cooperating with the Ha noi medical university in training the master of science of the public nutrition.
- Establishing the nutrition policies through development the national plan of nutrition (NPAN); leading and guiding the program of malnutrition control of children and the nutrition trace element deficiency (vitamin A defficiency and alimentary anemia).

- The international cooperation: Cooperating with UNICEF, WHO, FAO, WFP and ILSI as well as many NGOs in the field of nutrition and food safety such as INMU (Thai Lan), Los- Banos university (Philippines), IRD (France), and
