* History:

National mental hospital was established in 6th july 1963 according to the dicision No 519/BYT with 100 beds. The predecessor is hospital D.
Its name changed in to psychologycal hospital (1965) and then to National mental hospital (1965).
The National mental hospital was rebuilt according to the dicision No 429/TTg by Vice minister in 28th October1976 with 500 beds.

* Some major achivements:

- Health cadres with high professional levels
- Modern medical equipment for diagnose and treatment with high quality.
- Inpatients: 2500 rounds/year; Out patients: 30000 rounds/year; bed power: 130-150%.
- Many therapeutic regimens have been applied such as chemotherapy, working therapy, social psychological rehabitation therapy, bahavioural therapy, electric shoke therapy...
- Ensure the accommadation for patients with schizophrenia or epylepsy
- Trainning: for 550 profession oriented M.D and 23 M.D with 1st grade.
- Profession guiding: assist the MOH to make the policy for development of mental branch, up to now there are 25 mental hospitals and 40 mental department in provincial hospitals.
- The network of mental disease treatment was established. The national program for public mental health protection is implemented well in 43/63 provinces and cities.
- Scientific research:
+ Primary investigation the mental disorders (from 1966)
+ Deep researches: behavioural disorders in teenager; brain trauma due to traffic accidents; drug abuse and alcohol abuse; the social psychological functional rehabitation for patients with schizophrenia in the publicity; verification the medication of drug withdrawal; depression and new drugs; mental disorder of brain post trauma. Up to now there are 100 themes (from local to National level).
+ Assist the medical forensic mental verification.
